Learn all about rhythms and beats!
This easy open and go lesson is perfect for classrooms or home-school. No previous musical experience is necessary to facilitate these lessons.
About PRELUDE:
All lessons are suitable for ages 4-12 years old and can be worked on together as a group or family. Accompanying the teaching time is the choice between two activities; one for young learners ages 4-8 years old and one for older learners ages 8-12 years old.
Included in each 30 minute lesson is a "Setting The Stage" section which introduces the children to what they are about to learn followed by a more informative teaching time called "Diving Deeper", and ending with a hands on "Activity Time."
Each lesson has book suggestions as well as listening suggestions that correspond with the theme of the lesson!
Within each lesson you will find the option of using a link or a QR code that links you directly to a short video or live performance featuring music by different composers and artists.
Each lesson gives you a list of materials needed at the beginning of the lesson which usually includes many household items that a classroom or house would already have.
One important note is that the use of a music platform such as Apple music, Spotify or YouTube is a must when facilitating these musical lessons!
Included in this lesson:
- An opening "Pass The Beanbag" game where students have to pass the beanbag around in a circle without dropping it to Grieg's piece of music, 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King'. But watch out, the piece of music gets faster and faster as it goes along!
- Learning rhythms and clapping beats according to some popular nursery rhymes
- Using animal names like 'horse', 'chicken' and 'alligator' to clap quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes.
- Young learners get to test out their dance and rhythmic moves to 3 different pieces that all have different tempos - slow, medium and fast! Pieces include 'The Moonlight Sonata', 'Gillis Mountain' by the Rankin Family and the uptempo 'Winter Games' by David Foster.
- Older learners get to test out their rhythms on each other by using a door to clap rhythms or melodies of songs to one another.
- Bring out your camp cups as the Extra Challenge encourages students to use a sequence of rhythms using the simple setup of a table, your hands and plastic cups! A favorite game of mine when I went to summer camp!
- Listening Suggestions - "William Tell Overture", "Vienna Waltz", and "Canon In D."
- Book Suggestions - "Kat Keeps The Beat", "M is for Music", "Max Found Two Sticks" and "Play This Book."
